A mechanical design engineer’s path to Stryker
Taylor Pemberton is a Mechanical Design Engineer at Stryker’s Medical division in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Although Stryker is now what Taylor refers to as her dream job, she was not sure that she would end up here throughout her graduate school days.
Taylor first learned about Stryker through an alumnus of her graduate school, Washington University in St. Louis. After researching the company, she dreamt of working here and applied to multiple internships for two summers in a row. Although she was not offered an opportunity as an intern, Taylor did not give up hope.
Time passed and Taylor attended her school’s career fair and the Society of Women in Engineering (SWE) conference. She recalls not wanting to visit the Stryker booth because she had been previously turned down for internships, but something in her told her that if she didn’t at least try again, she would regret it. When she walked over and met Stryker’s employees, something just felt right. She interviewed one more time and was excited at the opportunity to get her foot in the door.
She felt even more hopeful when she was told that she passed the Gallup interview, however, she was informed that it may be too soon for her to apply for a job since she was not graduating for another six months. In the meantime, Taylor was offered a job opportunity by one of Stryker’s main competitors. She was set on accepting the job, but a voice in her head told her the same thing it did at the SWE conference: "But what about Stryker?".
She listened to her instincts, reached out to the Stryker recruiters, and informed them of her other offer. By the end of the day, Stryker’s recruiter contacted Taylor and asked her about her availability for an interview the following week. She interviewed and was offered the position she had been hoping for. She recalls accepting the job offer with Stryker as the best decision she ever made and that “this job is my dream job and I couldn't be more thrilled.”
"I chose to work at Stryker for the collaborative and competitive culture. I wanted an environment that would push me out of my comfort zone and challenge me on a daily basis. Stryker has given me so much responsibility and ownership right out of the gate, which is incredible, and I am so grateful for this opportunity”
