Career tips from a female executive

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

Jessica Mathieson is the Vice President and General Manager of Stryker’s Acute Care business. We sat down with Jessica to learn more about her career journey and the tips she has learned along the way.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Enjoy the journey. Do not get focused on the destination. The journey is where true growth and development comes from. Take time every year to reflect on the journey. Constant reflection is healthy to continue to grow.

What are your top daily habits for career success?

1. Wake up early before the rest of the house is up (5 am-5:30 am)

2. Morning schedule: read for 15 minutes, workout for 30-35 minutes, meditate for 3 minutes (I do these three things before I check my phone or computer)

3. I spend 30 minutes every Friday afternoon going over my calendar for the following week. This helps me prepare for the next week.

4. Never be the first one to talk during a meeting. Listen more than you speak.

What are a few recommendations for podcasts, or books, related to career development?

I am a huge fan of Brené Brown. Below, I have suggested one of her books and her podcast.

  • Daring Greatly by Brené Brown - This book talks about the voices in our heads which we all have at times and how to lean into whatever challenge is ahead of you, versus taking a step back because the voices are telling you there is no way you can do it, or you are not ready (I call the voices in my head the Mean Girls). I have learned to shut them up over the years.
