Meet Silvia Braga, Vice President and General Manager of Latin America
Silvia Braga is the Vice President and General Manager of Latin America at Stryker and currently resides in São Paulo, Brazil. When she’s not traveling around Latin America meeting her employees, she can be found exercising and relaxing on the beach. We sat down with Silvia to learn more about what her life is like in and outside of Stryker.
Why did you join Stryker?
When I participated in the hiring process at Stryker, I was enchanted by the global leaders and the customer-oriented team in Latin America.
What does a day in your life look like?
I assumed my current position in January 2020 just before the pandemic arrived. I prepared myself for a year full of travel and getting to know the entire team in Latin America, as well as clients and partners.
With the pandemic, everything changed. Today, I work out of my home office three days a week and I go into the office for another two. I took advantage of this past year and a half to meet 100% of the employees in Latin America.
What has been your career path?
I have spent my entire career in marketing and sales. But whenever there was an opportunity, I would offer to act interim in some other area. I've led RA/QA, supply chain, and ProCare, and it helped me become more of a generalist and take General Manager positions in several companies. I've already managed three manufacturing plants and worked in financial companies, but what I'm really passionate about is healthcare and the opportunity to change patient’s lives every day.
Do you have any regrets in your career?
Nothing! Everything served as an apprenticeship and certainly formed the leader I am today.
What is life like outside of Stryker?
I love sports and being around people. I am a person who wakes up early, exercises, and is ready to face the day! I love traveling and getting to know new cultures and people. In my free time, you will find me on a beach, surrounded by friends and having fun. I'm also in love with animals and I have two dogs that are always with me. People say I have a lot of energy, and I agree with them; I'm also super positive and I always see the best of things.
Tell us something about yourself that people don’t know.
When I was an exchange student, I lived in Oregon and played football (soccer) for school. I won a scholarship to play and study at a university. My father, who didn't want his daughter living away for so long, especially playing football, which in Brazil was something for boys, didn't let me. So, I went back to Brazil and decided I wanted to be a sports journalist, I worked for a couple of years in the industry and ended up working in the Marketing area at GE and I took a very different path! The world lost a player and a not very talented journalist! 😊
