Overcoming the odds
Updated: Jan 8
When Elizabeth Buck was a little girl, she made a promise to herself that she would earn her master’s degree. Her journey in doing so has not been the straight line as she originally planned…
At age 15, she suffered a traumatic brain injury while playing soccer. Her doctors at UPMC weren't sure she would graduate high school on time, let alone attend college.
At age 18, she graduated from Penn Trafford High School in the top 5% of her class and moved across the country to attend Texas A&M University.
At age 21, she was hit by a distracted driver and sustained another brain injury. At age 22, she began taking graduate courses on top of her undergraduate schedule and graduated with her Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering in Spring 2019. She was halfway through her master’s degree when she was offered her dream job. After much consideration and prayer, she decided to accept the offer and moved to Florida to begin her career. At age 23, she started working full time at Stryker while finishing her Master's in Biomedical Engineering remotely!
Today, Elizabeth is a Quality Engineer on the Post Market team at Stryker's Mako Division where she is cultivating expertise in the field Orthopedics and Surgical Robotics. She has a passion for helping others and is driven to design innovative medical solutions to improve patient’s quality of life.
It’s employees, like Elizabeth, who make Stryker such a great place to work – people who are results-driven, looking to make a difference in the world.
