The benefits and challenges of working in Trauma Sales

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

At Stryker, our sales professionals sell products that improve patient's lives. Our diverse array of innovative medical technologies, including reconstructive, medical and surgical, and neurotechnology and spine products help people lead more active and satisfying lives. Sales within our Trauma and Extremities division is often our most difficult and most rewarding position. Hear from a few of our Trauma Sales reps to determine if this type of role is a good fit for you!

Who we look for:

  • Hard-working winners. You love driving in the fast lane and live out your mission to change lives by selling Stryker products that are making healthcare better.

  • Mission-driven salespeople. You live your work, feeding off the extreme demands of Trauma, not counting hours but rather lives impacted.

  • Energetic achievers. Upbeat associates who love being busy and never hesitate to help a customer or team member when needed.

Challenges in the role:

Finding enough time in the day

“The challenge that I face in my role with Stryker is finding enough time in the day to take advantage of all the opportunities to sell. Spending valuable time in the OR is both a blessing and a curse.” - Joseph, Trauma Sales Rep in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Getting in touch with key decision-makers

“In Orthopaedics, more and more surgeons are working for the hospital and the surgeons are having less say in what products they use. We need to focus on the key decision-makers, whether it’s the CEO or the Chief of Trauma who has the CEO’s ear. The CEO isn’t always easy to get in touch with.” - Patrick, Trauma Sales Rep in Boston, Massachusetts

The sales process is ever-changing

“Our business continues to face challenges in many regards. Increased pricing pressure from health systems, as well as the consolidation of said health systems; the sales process of this role is ever-changing – in my tenure, we have gone from highly technical salespeople to C-suite salespeople – you must be a true chameleon to be successful; not everyone values the role of a salesperson in the operating room.” - Matt, Trauma Sales Rep in Cincinnati, Ohio

Why they remain at Stryker:

We're improving lives

“I wake up every morning with a purpose and know that our products are best in class and truly help improve patients’ lives.” - Stephanie, Foot and Ankle Sales Rep in Chicago, Illinois

Growth opportunities

“From Day 1, Stryker has given me the resources to accomplish both: objectives set by the direct management team, as well as those that I have personally set. Stryker has never limited my ability to take ownership of my career and grow in whatever direction I desire.” - Abram, Surgical Sales Rep in Melbourne, Florida

The culture

"I like the culture, the people, and leadership. I like the focus on growth and knowing that everyone is behind that." - Pat, Trauma Sales Rep in Boston, Massachusetts
