5 signs that you are ready for your next career move

Updated: Apr 8

Whether you have been in your job for 5 weeks, 5 months or 5 years sometimes a change in career is needed. The question is, in an everchanging careers market, how do you know when it is time to make your next career move?

Here are 5 points to help you decide if this is the time for you to make a change:

1. Have you achieved everything you want to in your current role?

First, review your goals – have you met them all? Is there anything else you can do to add value? You may need to speak to your manager to see if there is opportunity for growth, and if the answer is no, it might be time to consider your next career move.

2. Do you want to expand your knowledge?

Do you have potential to grow and gain knowledge in your field? Are you an expert at everything you do in your current role, and feel there is no further room for professional development? Whatever the answer might be, it’s a good indicator on whether it is time for your next career change or not.

3. Do you want a greater challenge?

Do you find yourself going into work every day doing the same monotonous tasks? Have you gotten to where you want to be in your job and find yourself wondering if there is a greater work challenge out there for you? If so, it may be time to look at the next step in your career journey.

4. What are the reasons to stay?

It is always important to weigh up the pros and cons of every situation, so when it comes to making a career change it is also important to consider the reasons you have to stay in your current role. The reasons may range from it being your dream role or you have an amazing work/life balance to great work colleagues. Whatever the reasons for staying might be, a balanced look at the overall picture will help in making the decision to stay or move on.

5. Make the decision.

After weighing up all the options and maybe having conversations with friends, family and work colleagues, at the end of the day only you have the power to make this decision. Take the time to reflect on why you are making the decision and where you want to go from here. Then, once you are confident that you have made the right choice, act upon it.
